40 stray dogs killed in Kerala's Kannur, police register case

Forty stray dogs here today were killed after they were allegedly injected with poison, prompting police to launch a probe in this regard.
A case was registered today under section 11 (1) (l)of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 1960 Act, police sources said adding an inquiry was launched into the incident based on a complaint by Bina Williams of Kannur.
Though the dog catchers were engaged by the panchayat, now they have washed their hands saying the local people had engaged the dog catchers following increasing incidents of stray dogs attacking people.
Reena Richards, Secretary of the Maharashtra-based Satjeevkaruna Parivar, an Animal welfare trust, said the carcasses of the dogs had been dumped in a heap.

The dog catchers with metal wires and poison bottles were prevented from killing more dogs following their intervention. They were stopped and police called, she said.
The complainant has also demanded post mortem of the dogs which will reveal the poison used for killing them.
