5 Delhi hospitals not strictly adhering to biomedical waste

Five promiment Delhi-based hospitals have been found to be not strictly adhering to the parametres prescribed under the bio-medical waste management rules, Environment and Forest Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said Rajya Sabha today.
The five hospitals are Max Super Speciality Hospital, Indraprastha Extension, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Limited, Okhla, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Rohini, Dr Hedgewar Arogya Sansthan, government of NCT and Lok Nayak hospital, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg.
Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Natarajan said "in compliance with an order of National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had conducted a surprise inspection of the five hospitals and submited their inspection report. NGT observed that none of these five hospitals is strictly adhering to the parametres prescribed under Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 1998."

She told the house that the NGT has issued directions to these five hospitals to comply with the provisions of BMW rules and the compliance is being monitored.
During the year 2012-13, CPCB has inspected 32 Health Care Facilities (HCFs), 17 Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal Facilities (CBMWTDFs) and nine armed forces health care establishments.
"Directions under section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, have been issued to 12 CBMWTDFs and one HCF for non-compliance of BMW rules,"Natarajan added.
