At least 53 people, including firefighters and policemen, were injured in Bangladesh today after agitating garment workers vandalised a fire station here and clashed with security officials.
The workers damaged 30 vehicles following the brawl with the firemen and the police in Savar.
Traffic at the Dhaka-Aricha highway was suspended for two hours as they blocked it and set a motor-cycle on fire.
The police had to fire rubber-bullets and lob tear-gas canisters to bring the situation under control, a local police official was quoted as saying by bdnews24.Com.
At least 53 people, including firefighters and policemen, were injured in the clash, The Daily Star reported.
Witnesses said a bus carrying workers of a garment factory rammed into the footpath in front of the Savar Fire Station around 8 am while taking a u-turn.
Workers in the bus claimed that some of their colleagues were manhandled by firefighters following which they attacked the fire station.
Hundreds of workers from nearby garment factories also joined them and vandalised the station. They looted the office and staff quarters and damaged three fire service vehicles.
"The situation is now calm. But we are looking in to what really happened," a police official said.
Additional police forces with water-cannons and riot cars have been deployed in the area to avert any more trouble.
