540 destitute children rescued from rly stations in SR: Report

A total of 540 runaway and destitute children and 50 missing women have been rescued from the premises of various railway stations by the Southern Railway unit of the Railway Protection Force in the first six months of this year, a report said today.

Besides, more than 37,000 people were fined for littering railway premises in the Southern Railway during the period from January to June this year, the performance report by the Southern Railway said.

In 2017 calendar year, the RPF had rescued 905 children, including 152 girls, besides 80 women from premises of railway stations, it said.

This year, the RPF personnel rescued 540 runway and destitute children and handed them over to their parents or child help line.

The RPF also redressed 368 complaints received through 'Helpline Number 182' apart from 501 help requests on its Twitter handle during the period.

On checks on criminal activities, the report said under a law on 'unlawful possession of railway property' 227 criminals were held and railway property worth over Rs five lakhs were recovered.

RPF seized contraband goods worth Rs.1.75 crore and 133 offenders were handed over to the agencies concerned, "which was widely appreciated," the report said.
