At least 61 people trapped in a monorail at a popular tourist spot in Singapore due to a technical fault were safely rescued today.
The technical fault, which resulted in a power outage, disrupted the service of the Sentosa Express, the island's monorail system, last night, Channel News Asia reported today.
Sixty one guests and staff were on board the train. They were stranded in the train last night for more than an hour after it stalled. The last passenger was safely brought down during the wee hours today, according to Sentosa Leisure Management.
The monorail connects Sentosa island to HarbourFront on the mainland across the waters.
Koh Piak Huat, Divisional Director of Operations at Sentosa Leisure Management, said the two-carriage train was bound for VivoCity, a major shopping complex on the mainland.
Following the disruption, efforts were made to immediately transfer the monorail passengers to the nearest station. However, due to technical difficulties in moving the rescue train, the Singapore Civil Defence Force was eventually called in to assist with the rescue operations, he said.
"Initial investigations indicate a technical fault which resulted in a power outage, leading to the stalling of the train," Koh said.
The affected train has since been repaired and the Sentosa Express service resumed normal operations at 7 AM local time today. Further investigations were underway.
The fully elevated 2.1-kilometre two-way line Sentosa Express was completed in 2006. The monorail system can move up to 4,000 passengers per hour per direction.
