7,086 incidents concerning Indians abroad in last 1 year: Govt

There have been 7,086 cases of deaths of workers, imprisoned persons or other Indian nationals that have been reported by Indian missions or posts abroad during the past one year, the government said today.
Minister of State for External Affairs Gen (retd) V K Singh that the maximum number of such deaths occured in Saudi Arabia (2427) followed by in the UAE (2513).
The number of Indians whose bodies are still lying in mortuaries of foreign countries is 111, with 98 of them being in Saudi Arabia, he said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
In response to another question on attacks on Indians abroad, Singh said that there have been 56 incidents in which 88 people have been attacked.

To another question, Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj laid a statement related to Indians held hostage abroad.
As per her statement, there have been three incidents in Afghanistan in the last three years and all five persons have been repatriated. In Australia, there has been one incident and both Indians have been released while in the Philippines there were two incidents and both the persons were released.
According to it, in Iraq, Indians have been caught in conflict areas and that a group of 41 Indians working in a construction company in Mosul were taken captive by the ISIS. One of them escaped captivity but the others have not yet been released, it said, adding that another group of 46 nurses was released from Iraq.

In Nigeria, all 48 persons who were kidnapped over the last three years have been released as was the person who was held hostage in one incident in Sudan, the statement said.
