The blast, believed to be an IED explosion, targeted the convoy of security forces on their way to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's capital Peshawar from Kohat district.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Information Minister Shaukat Yousufzai said nine persons, including three children, were killed in the blast whereas more than 20 were wounded, the Dawn reported.
Over a dozen cars were damaged after the explosion near Badabair police station on the outskirts of Peshawar.
The area where blast occurred is congested with people who come for shopping from the nearby villages.
