Jazz maestro legend Derek Julian and Indo-American saxophonist-composer Rudhresh Mahanthappa, renowned for fusing progressive jazz with south Indian classical music are among this year's Jazz Utsav that begins here tomorrow..
The two-day festival, which is its 31st edition this year is set to open with the theme 'Past, Present and Future of Jazz' complete with a line up that indicatively brings young talent and veteran artists of Jazz music on the same stage.
The event has been carrying on the legacy of bringing jazz music from around the globe to Delhi audience since 1978.
Pianist Joel Lyssarides from Sweden, the Arthur Dutkiewicz Trio from Poland, Karim Ellaboudi with Vasundhara and The Woodstock Jazz Band of students from Mussoorie are also performing at the festival.
"This year's festival is special. We have the best of Indian jazz with the amazing guitar of Derek Julien. Women are well represented. If you haven't heard Kittu Sequeira or Vasundhara Vidalur it's time you did so at Jazz this year," organiser Astri Ghose said.
"And if you wonder what the future holds for Indian jazz, see the talented young girls and boys in the Woodstock jazz," Ghose said.
Derek Julien was part of the first wave of Jazz in India in the late 1960s, whereas Poland's Arthur Dutkiewicz Trio is one of the leading Polish jazz bands. The Polish band is touring India is the backdrop of their recently released album, 'Prana' - the power and energy of life.
Winner of the 2014 Jan Wallander Prize, Swedish pianist Joel Lyssarides is also one of the major highlights of the event. He will be performing on the 2nd day of the festival December 6.
Capital Jazz has partnered with Teamwork Arts to organise the festival for which the tickets are available online at insider.In.
