A crater of 1.5ft by 2ft appeared in the middle of the Darga Road in the Park Circus area as motorists in their hurry to drive away from the stretch resulted in a traffic jam in the area.
Mayor-elect Sovan Deb Chatterjee along with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) senior engineers rushed to the area said that it could be because of the collapse of pipeline of the age-old drainage network laid during the British-era.
"This is an important road connecting the airport and the bypass. We are yet to ascertain what has actually gone wrong that led to the cavity. It can be because of the damage of a drain pipe which dated back to the British period," Chatterjee said.
