Almost seven decades after it
was established, a government aided school here is now bereft of students and the two teachers on duty reduced to visiting and locking the premises after school hours.
The Government Aided Higher Elementary school (up to eighth standard) is functioning at Mosukkaraipalayam village, 25 km from here since 1947, in a tiled roof building.
Palanisamy, a villager, said the school was started as an elementary school (Tamil Medium) and later it was upgraded into an Higher Elementary school.
A Headmaster and two teachers taught 120 students till last year. The Headmaster retired in May and the teachers were engaged in teaching just three students this academic year.
Villagers said almost all parents have admitted their wards in nearby English Medium schools, so the strength of the school has come down to three.
The two teachers started teaching a third standard and two fifth standard students till last week. The three students, all of a sudden, joined an English Medium School.
The two teachers attend the school by 9 a.M. Remain in school till 5 p.M and leave after locking the school.
When contacted the District Elementary Education Officer Kalaiselvan said "The school is being run by a trust and it is a Government Aided school. The school management has to take initiative to bring students to the school."
Because of the current situation, the department will soon transfer the two teachers to some other government aided school in the district, he said.
The management could not be reached for comment.
