BJP today accused Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government of going slow on appointment of Lokayukta and his/her deputy, "fearing" action against AAP's four MLAs including Law Minister Jitendra Tomar.
Tomar was alleged to have submitted fake educational qualification documents while filing nomination for the Assembly election held in February 2015.
The BJP also demanded Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to direct the state government to expedite process to fill the post of Lokayukta, lying vacant since November 2013.
"It appears that Kejriwal government fears appointing Lokayukta, as within less than two months we have four MLAs including Tomar who may face penal action once Lokayukta takes cognisance of their matters.
"It seems the government, which talks a lot on anti-corruption, dithers when it comes to appointing Lokayukta fearing indictment of its legislators," Vijender Gupta, who heads BJP's legislature unit in assembly, alleged.
Gupta said that as per Constitutional requirements, it is mandatory to appoint Lokayukta within six months once it becomes vacant.
As per norms, the Lieutenant Governor appoints Lokayukta on recommendation of a committee which includes Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Leader of main opposition party and a government nominee.
"Strangely, Delhi awaits appointment of Lokayukta and his/her deputy ever since last Lokayukta demitted office in November 2013. During his last tenure as the chief minister, Kejriwal made a lot of hue and cry over Lokpal but did nothing to appoint Lokayukta," he added.
