An abandoned new born boy, rescued and admitted to a Nadia hospital by police, was found missing triggering mob protest and road blockade at Haringhata area of the district.
Confirming the incident that the child was missing, SDO, Kalyani, Swapan Kumar Kundu said, "I have told the BMOH (Block Medical Officer of Health) to lodge a complaint with local police."
The authorities of Haringhata Rural Hospital also lodged a complaint with the local police but refused to talk to the media.
A district police officer said as per the complaint, the hospital authorities said the baby was found missing today.
It had been admitted to the hospital on August 30 by locals who spotted it lying on roadside in the nearby area.
As the news spread a childless couple Paritosh Mallick and Tapashi, who had been frequenting the hospital everyday to see the baby and even approached the district health officials for completing the procedures to adopt it, sat in the midst of traffic along Haringhata-Kanchraparas Road and were soon joined by locals. The blockade went on for two hours.
Police later persuaded them to lift the blockade.
Some of the eyewitnesses claimed to have seen a gang running away from the hospital compound and then boarding a car with the baby but this was denied by the hospital.
The SDO said, we are looking into all aspects.
