ACB arrests Navi Mumbai police officer, two others for graft

Three people including a senior police inspector of the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate who were arrested by the Mumbai unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) last evening for allegedly accepting a bribe were remanded to police custody today by the Thane district court.
They were produced before Sessions Judge S J Kale this afternoon who remanded them to custody until September 29.
DGP R J Kadri who appeared for the ACB, sought custody of the accused, which was granted.
Senior police inspector of Central Business District (CBD) Belapur police station Sanjay Karyekar (58), police constable Pandurang Bomble (47)of the same police station and one Arif Habib Mohammed Shaikh (59) were arrested by the ACB, based on a complaint by a retired government medical officer.
Allegedly, a bribe of Rs 1 lakh was made by the senior police inspector to desist from filing a case against the retired government medical officer against whom there enquiry proceedings in connection with a property related complaint.
Later, after negotiations, it was agreed that a sum of Rs 90,000 would be paid to the police officer, who asked the complainant to hand over the bribe money to the police constable.
However, the police constable asked the complainant to hand over the cash to Arif Habib Mohammed Shaikh.
On Monday evening, Shaikh was caught by the ACB accepting the money from the complainant near a hotel in CBD Belapur, on behalf of the police constable, for the police officer.
Later, the ACB arrested all the three accused and an offence was registered.
They have been charged under Sections 7, 8, 13 (1)(d) and Section 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
