An acrobat, named Pedro Aunion Monroy, died after he performed a stunt of plunging over 100 ft before Green Day came on stage for their headlining set at Spain's Mad Cool Festival, which was held in Madrid. He was 42.
Monroy was performing an aerial stunt from inside a box that was suspended from a crane at the time of the accident, reported The Independent.
Although it appeared that he was wearing a harness, the artiste plunged to the ground in front of thousands of stunned festivalgoers. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but Monroy succumbed to the injuries he sustained after the fall.
The rock band went on to perform their set, after a slight delay, which earned them and the organisers quite a few brickbats for being insensitive.
Green Day took to Twitter to clarify their stand that they were not notified of Monroy's death until after their performance and offered their condolences.
"We just got off stage at Mad Cool Festival to disturbing news. A very brave artist named Pedro lost his life tonight in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends," read the band's tweet on their official handle.
The Mad Cool Festival also issued a statement defending their stance on going forward with the fest, despite Monroy's demise on the spot, also empathising with the victim's family.
"Mad Cool Festival regrets the terrible accident that the aerial dancer suffered during the second day of the festival. For security reasons, the festival decided to continue with its programming. We send our most sincere condolences to all his family. Tomorrow (July 8), during the festival, we will render a heartfelt tribute to the artiste.
