Sub-Inspector Sukhbir Singh, acting SHO of Sadar police station, was arrested yesterday by a vigilance team headed by DSP Kulwant Rai while he was taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 from complainant Avtar Singh in connection with a case, police said today.
Avtar Singh and seven others of Khalwara village had secured interim bail in a case registered on April 30 after a clash with his relatives, police said.
However, the SI allegedly demanded illegal gratification for helping Avtar Singh and others in connection with regular bail in the case, they said.
Acting on the complaint of Avtar Singh, the Vigilance team laid a trap and caught SI Sukhbir Singh red-handed while taking bribe from Avtar Singh inside Sadar police station here, they said, adding he was arrested under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
