Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said here today that new cultivation methods should be adopted to achieve higher agricultural yields.
Rao, who took part in a programme on the occasion of the 81st birth anniversary of Telangana ideologue K Jayashanker at the agriculture university here, named the institution after the late leader, according to a release issued today by the university.
He launched the 'Mane Ooru- Mane Kuragayalu' (Our Village - Our Vegetables) scheme on the occasion, the release said.
As per the scheme, vegetable cultivation would be promoted on 3,000 acres across 31 villages in districts like Ranga Reddy, Medak and Mahabubnagar to cater to the needs of Hyderabad, he said.
The government would implement the scheme by paying remunerative priced to farmers in rural areas and supplying them to urban population at reduced rates, he said.
The government would give importance to agriculture and soil testing would be done as per rainfall data, temperature and groundwater resources, he said.
Noting that Telangana has been recognised as an ideal place to develop seeds, he called upon farmers to come forward in the endeavour.
Seed companies should buy seeds developed by farmers, he said.
