Umesh Sopan Machhindra, a Police Inspector attached to the Crime Branch here, had demanded Rs five lakh from a person, facing criminal charges, for not arresting him and threatened him that if he did not pay the money, he would be implicated in more cases, the ACB said.
The accused, from whom Machhindra demanded bribe, was facing some criminal charges and was on a conditional bail granted by the high court after a local court rejected his bail application, the anti-graft agency said.
"However, the complainant approached the ACB and accordingly a trap was laid at the Crime Branch this afternoon," Deputy Superintendent of Police, ACB, Milind Totre, told PTI.
When Machhindra realised that he was being trapped, he started running away from the Crime Branch office located at the New Administrative Building in Divisional Commissionerate compound.
"The ACB sleuths gave a hot chase and he was caught on the street. However, he managed to throw away the wads of currency notes while running," Totre added.
