After snow & rains, weather improves in Kashmir

After two days of snow and rains, weather marked an improvement at most places in Kashmir and Ladakh region owing to overcast conditions even as the Meteorological Department predicted mainly dry weather over three days from tomorrow.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registered an increase of over a degree in the minimum temperature as it settled above the freezing point at 0.5 degree Celsius compared to minus 0.8 the previous night, an official of the Meteorological Department here said.
He said even as there was improvement in the minimum temperature in the city, the maximum was below normal by four notches yesterday owing to rains and snowfall on Thursday.

The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter, recorded a low of minus 8.2 degrees Celsius, an increase from the previous night's minus 9.6.
He, however, said the resort was the coldest recorded place in the state.
Kupwara town, in north Kashmir, which had witnessed a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius, registered an increase of over a degree in the night temperature to settle at a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, the official said.

He said the south Kashmir towns of Qazigund and Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 2.0 and minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The famous hill resort of Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's minus 2.4, the official said.
He said Kargil in Ladakh region recorded a low of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, four notches up from the previous night's minus 9.0 degrees Celsius.
The nearby Leh town recorded a minimum of minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, over two notches up from minus 6.0 yesterday, the official said.
He said there are chances of isolated rains today, while the weather is likely to remain mainly dry for three days from tomorrow. There is possibility of another brief spell of wet weather from February 17, the official said.
