The ruling AIADMK today announced a cash assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a medical aspirant from Tiruchirappalli who allegedly committed suicide recently after she failed to clear the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami, who is also AIADMK joint coordinator, and party coordinator O Panneerselvam expressed grief over the death of K Subasri, daughter of an AIADMK labour union functionary.

"A financial assistance of Rs five lakh will be given to the family of Subasri," the two leaders said in a statement.

They appealed to students against taking such extreme steps.

Apparently upset over her inability to clear the NEET, Subasri had ended her life by hanging herself.
