AICC suspended Sudip Roy Barman and 14 others today, a month after he resigned as CLP leader of Tripura in protest against Congress' decision to tie up with the Left Front in West Bengal assembly polls.
Tripura PCC President Birajit Sinha told a press conference that AICC suspended Roy Burman, former youth Congress president Sushanta Chowdhury and 13 others for "publicly maligning" the image of the party and for anti-party activities.
"The AICC decision was conveyed to him (Roy Burman). Earlier, he was issued show cause notice for maligning the image of the party publicly and for anti-party activities", Sinha said.
Supporters of Roy Burman and Chowdhury shouted slogans in front of the Congress Bhavan here and ransacked it but none was injured, sources in the party said.
Roy Burman, also Leader of the Opposition, had resigned on April 7 protesting against the party's decision to tie up with the Left Front in West Bengal assembly polls.
In his letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on April 7 , Roy Barman had said "I am extremely shocked and depressed to find that there has been a dramatic and drastic change in our party's policy."
"I completely fail to understand the reason for the tie-up with the Left parties in West Bengal assembly elections. In spite of your understanding of CPI(M)'s unpredictable character, its treacherous role in the past, anti-national thinking and activities and immense barbaric atrocities upon Congressmen in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura, you have given a nod to this so-called alliance/seat adjustment/tactical understanding."
He tendered his resignation to Tripura Assembly Speaker Ramendra Debnath.
In the 60-member House, Opposition Congress has 10 seats and the rest belong to the Left front.
