Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar today expressed anguish over the 'attitude' of some sports persons for pestering the government with demands for preferred placements despite being absorbed as officers in state service.
"Some sports persons insist that they be given a particular department of their choice even though they are given grade A and grade B positions," Ajit told the Legislative Council without mentioning any names.
The matter was raised by the Leader of Opposition Vinod Tawde during Question Hour.
"There are some sports persons who insist that government recruit them in the sales tax department even though their qualification is not suitable for that particular job," Ajit said.
He said it was difficult for government to accommodate such demands. "Even though government rolls out red carpet for them (sports persons), they demand jobs of their choice".
State sports minister Padmakar Valvi said the government would take a policy decision on absorbing professional bodybuilder Suhas Khamkar in grade A job.
"He is currently placed in grade B. The government will have to take a policy decision to absorb him in grade A. It will take some time but we will do it," Valvi said.
Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh said the state government needs to encourage athletes so that they will emerge as international players.
