According to a statement, a condolence meeting was held inside the varsity's premises to mourn the death of Sharma, the convenor of Azadi Bachao Andolan movement which has been involved in the struggle to safeguard national interests in a globalized economy.
AU PRO P K Sahoo said Sharma was "a proud alumni" of Allahabad University from where he completed his post- graduation in Mathematics in 1957 before going to Paris for higher studies where he obtained his Doctorate in 1981.
"Sharma thereafter returned to Allahabad and made his mark as a distinguished mathematician at AU where he was noted as much for his social activism as his academic achievements.
"He had also been a director of the Institute of Gandhian Thought and Peace Studies besides being associated with Azadi Bachao Andolan which made him famous across the nation," Sahu said.
