Air conditioner, almirah, balloon, chappals, coconut, window, carpet, bottle and bread are some of the 'free' symbols available for registered, unrecognised political parties.
The Election Commission has come out with a list of 84 'free' symbols available with it to be used by registered political parties which are unrecognised.
According to Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, symbols are either reserved or free. A reserved symbol is a symbol which is meant for a recognised political party for exclusive allotment to contesting candidates set up by that party. A free symbol, on the other hand, is a symbol other than that reserved for a recognised party.
Some of the free symbols issued by EC on January 13 include almirah, air conditioner, auto rickshaw, balloon, basket containing fruits (applicable in all states and Union Territories except Tamil Nadu), bat, batsman, battery torch, belt, black board, bottle, bread, brief case, brush, bucket, cake, calculator, camera, candles, carpet, carrom board, cauliflower and chappals.
BSP, BJP, CPI, CPI (M), Indian National Congress, Nationalist Congress Party are the six recognised political parties at the national level. There are 46 political parties recognised at the state level. These parties have their reserved symbols at the national and state level.
While bicycle is the reserved symbol for Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, it is the reserved symbol for Telugu Desam in Andhra Pradesh.
According to a January 13 EC notification, there are a total of 1,737 registered, but unrecognised political parties.
