Alstom T&D India plans to set up one more plant to meet High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) convertor transformers, it was officially announced here today.
However, Alstom's country president for India and South Asia Robin Basu refused to say where the proposed plant would be set up, while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Alstom T&D India flagging off the first 'Made in India' 800 KV (HVDC) convertor transformer for the Champa-Kurukshetra UHVDC link, at its Vadodara-based transformer manufacturing facility.
The HVDC convertor transformer is part of PowerGrid's 3,000 MW, 800KV Champa-Kurukshetra UHVDC Phase 1 link that connects the power station of Central India near Champa to the demand centre which is 1,365 km away at Kurukshetra, Basu said.
Alstom has orders worth more than Rs 10,000 crore for HVDC convertor transformers from all over the country he said, adding that the company recently invested around Rs 450 crore to expand its manufacturing and testing facilities at Vadodara.
He said that the Vadodara unit has become a significant contributor in building a robust 765 KV AC transmission backbone in India.
Alstom has supplied more than 190 units of 765 KV transformers and shunt reactors from this unit to various clients like PowerGrid, state utilities and private generating companies, he said.
He said that HVDC is increasingly the preferred choice for utilities to ensure efficient, reliable bulk power transmission over long distances and Alstom Grid is a major supplier of turnkey HVDC solutions worldwide.
