Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh today hailed the Centre's move to put the proposed one-day ban on Hindi news channel NDTV India on hold, calling it a "victory of democratic forces".
In a statement here, Singh said it was clear that the Central government had been forced to surrender in the face of widespread resentment evoked by the "arbitrary and dictatorial decision."
He had on Sunday announced day-long protest on November 9 to coincide with the ban.
The Congress leader made it clear that any future attempt by the Central government to stifle democratic institutions in the country will be met with the same resistance.
The Modi government will not be allowed to get away with such despotic actions, he asserted.
The proposed ban was reminiscent of the way the media was being gagged in Punjab since the Badal regime took over the state's reins, he said.
Amid a major outcry, the government today put on hold its directive to NDTV India to go off air for a day over Pathankot terror attack after the broadcaster sought a review of the decision.
