Senior Congress leader and Punjab PCC chief Amarinder Singh today favoured Priyanka Gandhi campaigning actively in Punjab, a day after another senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad favoured her campaigning outside Amethi and Rae Bareli for UP polls next year.
"She has always been a very perceptive, very intelligent, and very determined woman. It would be a great thing for Punjab, if she comes and campaigns in Punjab," he told reporters.
Asked if he would urge her to campaign for the party in Punjab, he said, "Yes, I would certainly request her to come and campaign in Punjab."
He added, "Rahul ji will campaign and his programme is being made. I would also request Soniaji to campaign for the party in Punjab ahead of polls."
Amarinder also said a generational change within the party was in the offing with Sonia Gandhi handing over the mantle to Rahul Gandhi.
"She is a very very capable lady and I am sorry that she would not be leading the party in the coming days. She would be missed by the party when generations change," he said.
"I have also said that I win or lose, this is the last election for Amarinder Singh and a new generation would come," he added.
Asked when the change would happen and the recent appointments at the top are no indication of this change, he said, "You can't change everybody overnight. I think there will be gradually replacements and that will happen."
He said, "What is happening, Soniaji wants to take backstage and she is wants to put Rahulji and Priyanka in front. That change will be coming and other changes will be coming forward."
To the recent appointments, he said, "You cannot put Ghulam Nabi Azad under a 40-year-old. You have to see experience, ability and age. There will be a generational change."
Azad had yesterday said, "I do hope that she will definitely campaign in some other places as per time available to her."
At the AICC briefing yesterday, senior party spokesman Ajay Maken said it was up to Priyanka to decide when she wanted to get into active politics.
