An American man who was among three prisoners who staged a violent escape from a courthouse in Thailand has shot and injured himself and his wife as police surrounded them.
Police say Bart Allen Helmus first shot his Thai wife, Sirinapa Wisetrit, and then himself in his right temple on Wednesday. Helmus was hospitalized in serious condition, while his wife's injury was less serious.
The wife is a fellow escapee who like Helmus was facing a drug charge carrying a possible death sentence. A Thai man facing the same charge who escaped with them surrendered as police closed in.
The three fugitives, who were shackled, escaped Monday while being moved from a holding area to a courtroom in the resort town of Pattaya. They stabbed a guard during their escape.
