The American Oncology Institute (AOI) plans to have a total of 12 operational centres in South Asia, including eight in India, within the next two years, its CEO Lloyd Nazareth has said.
"In two years, we will have 12 operational centres, many of them are under construction, planning and design -- eight in India and four outside (one each in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal)", Nazareth told PTI here.
AOI currently has centres in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Guntur. The centres in Ludhiana and Nagpur would be launched by June this year, and another one at Coimbatore towards the end of the year.
AOI, the flagship international centre of the US-based Cancer Treatment Services International (CTSI), is looking to open operational centres in Mumbai, Kolkata and Pune, the CEO said.
Stating that number of cancer cases and mortality rate are "high" in India, CTSI Founder and Chairman Stanley Marks called for early detection and screening and stressed on "prevention".
He underlined the need to discouraging things that cause cancer like tobacco products.
"Children should be vaccinated. India has one of the highest cases of cervical cancer in women," Marks said, adding, young girls need to be administered HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine to prevent it.
