Referring to recent group clashes, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah today asked the students to shun violence or face postponement of the Students' Union elections.
"I will be compelled to reconsider the decision of holding elections next month if the present state of affairs continues at the campus," Shah said in a statement.
He was referring to recent clashes between rival factions of student groups since the announcement of student union polls last week.
"Elections are meant to inculcate a sense of participation in democratic systems among students and there was no scope, whatsoever, of allowing a situation to develop within the campus in which the cult of violence seeps in," the VC said.
Shah said that he was actively monitoring the situation and the final decision about the elections will be taken in the light of the situation which prevails in the next few days.
