Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association (AMUTA) today passed a resolution condemning unequivocally the decision of the varsity to suspend the Association's secretary.
The University Vice-Chancellor Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah has suspended AMUTA secretary Mustafa Zaidi yesterday for the latter's 'gross misconduct'.
AMUTA's resolution, which was passed during an emergency meeting held by AMUTA's executive committee, termed the move to suspend Zaidi as a "blatant attempt to intimidate" teachers and prevent them from highlighting irregularities in the University administration.
In a statement issued here today the AMUTA alleged that the University administration penalised Zaidi without giving him a chance to explain his point of view.
The AMUTA charged the V-C of manipulating rules and regulations for crushing genuine dissidence on the campus.
Earlier on October 13 the AMUTA had held a dharna demanding a CBI enquiry into alleged irregularities in admissions during the current academic year.
The AMUTA had alleged that the university was shielding officials involved in the alleged irregularities.
Yesterday the V-C denied allegations of irregularities in admission as "baseless".
He said, "Such allegations are emanating from persons who wish to discredit the present Controller of Admissions and Examinations because they are eying this post themselves."
The AMUTA is holding a General Body meeting tomorrow to chalk out its future course of action and has welcomed the decision of the Federation of Central Universities' Teachers' Associations (FEDCUTA) to support their demand.
