Angry family stage gherao of school after death of a student
Press Trust of India Kaithal (Har) Angry family members of a class VI student of government high school here today created ruckus following his death last night at a hospital in Chandigarh during treatment of injuries sustained after being severely beaten by some of his schoolmates.
According to police, student of Government High School in Balwanti village, Bhagwant, was severely beaten allegedly by some of his schoolmates on August 12 and 13 following an altercation.
He sustained injuries and later developed some complications, for which his family took him for treatment to two hospitals in the district.
But, his condition deteriorated and he was finally referred to Government Medical College and Hospital in a serious condition, where he died last night, police said.
Angry over his death, family of the deceased and villagers today gheraoed the school and allegedly manhandled some school staff also, they said.
Head Master called the police who tried to control the situation but the commotion continued for several hours.
The agitators were demanding action against the school staff for their "negligence".
The family also refused to cremate the body or get the autopsy done.
However, after being persuaded by the administration and the family, they relented and an autopsy was performed in the hospital.
Police said they were recording the statements of the concerned persons and were waiting for post-mortem report.
Further action would be taken after knowing the cause of the death, the police added.
The head teacher however asserted that there was no negligence on the part of the school staff.
