A delegation of Ministers and bureaucrats from Andhra Pradesh today visited three Amma Canteens here as part of an exercise to understand the functioning of the low-cost eateries run by local bodies and held discussions with senior Tamil Nadu Government officials.
The delegation included Food and Civil Supplies Minister Parithala Sunitha, Urban Development Minister P Narayana, Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao and Andhra Pradesh government officials including Districts Collectors of Ananthapur, Guntur and Chittoor.
"The delegation called on Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy. The visiting delegation was briefed by Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur about the functioning of Amma Canteens," a corporation press note here said.
The delegation visited Amma Canteens in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital Complex, the biggest among a chain of 203 canteens run by Chennai Corporation here besides canteens in Santhome and MGR Nagar.
The delegations interacted with the consumers in canteens and saw for themselves about the processes involved from procurement of vegetables, commodities to serving food.
Corporation officials indicated that the team from the neighbouring state was keen in beginning a similar network of food chain there to cater to the general public in the name of late Telugu Desam Party founder leader N T Rama Rao.
Andhra Pradesh is the latest state to evince interest in implementing the scheme. Several other states and civic bodies have already inspected the canteens, where food items are sold for prices ranging from Re 1 to Rs 5.
