Police said that the body of Chitturi Bharathi (15), a student of class X, is yet to be traced after some fishermen told them that a girl had jumped off a 30-ft bridge into the Godavari at Jonnada village, about 30-km from the district headquarters.
Bharathi's parents had approached police after she failed to return home from her school yesterday in Chamudulanka village in Alamuru mandal. Bharati's family resides in Chilakalapadu village under Madiki mandalam in the district.
Sub-inspector M Shankar Babu said that it was while searching for Bharathi that they received the information from the fishermen, who had further said that while they had tried to rescue the girl, she got washed away amidst the strong currents.
A case has been registered in this connection and efforts are on to trace the body, police said, adding that inquiries are also being made at Bharathi's school.
