AP to seek clarification from SC on Babhali barrage judgement

An all-party meeting convened by Andhra Pradesh government to discuss the Babhali barrage issue today decided to seek "relief/clarification" from the Supreme Court on its recent ruling.
"The Chief Minister (Kiran Kumar Reddy) also suggested that all-party leaders... May accompany the Major Irrigation Minister P Sudarshan Reddy to Delhi for review/clarification," an official release here said.
The Supreme Court in February this year rejected the petition of Andhra Pradesh government against the construction of Babhali barrage across Godavari river in Nanded district by the neighbouring Maharashtra.
The apex court also constituted a three-member supervisory committee, to ensure that Maharashtra followed the directives in its ruling.

It comprises representatives from Central Water Commission (CWC) and the two states, with CWC representative as chairman.
At today's meeting, Chief Minister Reddy and all the participants agreed that the committee should have executive powers for implementation of its directives, and in case of violation, stringent penalty should be levied.
The meeting was attended by Major Irrigation Minister P Sudarshan Reddy, Congress leader Gandra Venkataramana Reddy, TDP's Tummala Nageswara Rao and E Dayakara Rao, CPI's Narayana, B Vinod Kumar from TRS and senior BJP leader S V Seshagiri Rao, among others.
Andhra Pradesh is opposed to the construction of barrage (almost completed) as it thinks that it violates Godavari Water Dispute Agreement of 1975, and would reduce the flow of water to the Sriram Sagar Project.
