The Apparel, Made-ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) will train 20 lakh people by 2022 under the skill development programme, its Chairman A Sakthivel said today.
Under the scheme, fresh trainees would get a cash reward of Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 each depending upon the skill levels for training and certification.
With high attrition rate and acute shortage of manpower in the sector, Apparel Export Promotion Council has promoted the AMHSSC, facilitated by Tirupur Exporters' Association, under National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Sakthivel told reporters here.
Stating that the council has identified 45 job roles in the apparel sector, Sakthivel said that so far it has trained 10,000 persons and the certificate issued by NSDC and Council would be valid internationally.
The council so far has 55 training partners (manufacturers) and 100 applications are under process, he said, adding that the garment sector in Tirupur alone needs about 50,000 people and the council expects to fill this shortage in a year.
Earlier, talking on the scheme, Dr Roopak Vasishtha, CEO, AMHSSC, said the certificate would be a great boon as the government had decided that no persons will be allowed to go abroad without a skilled certificate from January, 2017.
As against the 97 per cent skilled manpower in South Korea, India has only three per cent skilled manpower, Vasishtha said.
