Aviators of the Army stationed in Ladakh successfully rescued members of a Naval Mountaineering expedition to Saser Kangri peak in Siachen Glacier area in Ladakh today, a Defence spokesman said.
The Naval mountaineering expedition consisting of 14 members and 10 porters was launched under the aegis of Integrated Headquarters of Defence (Navy) on August 9, he said, adding that the expedition was to scale Saser Kangri peak near Siachen Glacier.
The expedition team encountered an avalanche near Point 7285 (25030 feet) and some of its members sustained serious injuries necessitating immediate casualty evacuation, the spokesman said.
Responding to the call, pilots of the Indian Army Aviation rescued the Naval personnel, despite the area being covered with loose stones, boulders and snow, he said.
