Army chief General Bipin Rawat visited Amritsar today to review the security situation and operational preparedness of the formations guarding the sensitive frontiers in the western border state of Punjab.
He was received by Lt Gen Surinder Singh, Army Commander of Western Command, and Lt Gen Dushyant Singh, Corps Commander of the Vajra Corps, an official release said.
This was the first visit of the Army Chief to Amritsar since he took over the reins of the Indian Army.
The General visited the headquarters of the Panther Division where Lt Gen Dushyant Singh briefed him on operational preparedness of the Vajra Corps in view of prevailing situation in the region, the release said.
Gen Rawat also interacted with all the formation commanders responsible for the defence of Punjab.
He appreciated the high standards of military preparedness and level of coordination with BSF in safeguarding the interests of the nation in the areas under the command of the Vajra Corps.
The Army Chief was accompanied by his wife Madhulika Rawat, president of the Army Wives Welfare Association, and both of them interacted with service personnel, veterans and families of soldiers and lauded their contribution towards the service of the nation.
Gen Rawat along with his wife also paid obeisance at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) here.
The couple also visited the Partition Museum here. It is the world's first museum dedicated to the partition of the Indian sub-continent in 1947. The museum is dedicated to all those millions impacted in the largest migration in human history.
