It was inaugurated by General Officer Commandant [GOC], Trishakti Corps, G S Chandel, yesterday.
This is the first such unit in the North-East Region and has been undertaken as a pilot project with aid and technical expertise from Tetra Pak India Pvt Ltd, the GOC said.
The plant, costing around Rs 3.2 lakh for installation, would compact empty TPM cartons into pellets which can then be cost-effectively transported to a recycling plant at Khatima in Uttarakhand, a defence official said at the event.
Army personel deployed in remote areas are supplied with Tetra Pack Milk [TPM].
Annually about four and a half lakh TPM cartons get accumulated in these areas.
TPM cartons choke water bodies, pollute the soil and degrade ecology, the official said.
