An Army jawan was killed during an encounter that broke out today between militants and security forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said.
A soldier has been killed, said Director General of Police S P Vaid. He, however, refused to give further details, saying the encounter was continuing.
Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Samboora village of Pampore area this evening following information about the presence of some militants there, officials said.
As the security forces were conducting searches, the militants opened fire, they said, adding that a gunbattle ensued as the forces retaliated.
One body, believed to be that of a militant, could be seen lying on the ground from a distance, the officials said, adding that the identity of the person would be established once the security forces are able to take its custody.
