Army Sunday organised a marathon in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir to show solidarity with disabled soldiers and promote physical fitness, a defence spokesman said.
The Army is observing the year 2018 as the 'year of disabled soldier' to honour jawans who have been disabled in line of duty while serving the nation and to celebrate the undying spirit of 'soldiering', he said.
A large number of school children, civilians, and soldiers from Army, BSF, ITBP and police personnel participated in the event, the spokesman said.
He said the marathon was organised in four categories - half marathon of 21.1 km, combat run of 12 km, mini marathon of 10 km and introductory run of 5 km and the winners were awarded.
Apart from the enthusiastic runners, he said the marathon was also attended by disabled soldiers and a large number of ex-servicemen from the border districts of Samba and Kathua.
The Samba marathon depicted the bonding and camaraderie between the Army and civil population towards disabled soldiers who have made great sacrifices for India, the spokesman said.
The highlight of the event was General officer commanding of Gurj division Maj Gen K Narayanan leading from the front and completing half marathon, an army officer said.
He said Pawan Sharma, a liver cancer survivor also participated and stood 2nd in the half marathon.
