The Army today paid tributes to two jawans who were killed in a militant attack on a convoy in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.
In a solemn ceremony at Badamibagh Cantonment here, many senior officials from other security forces and civil administration, including the director general of Jammu and Kashmir Police, S P Vaid, Lieutenant General J S Sandhu, general officer commanding of Chinar Corps, participated, a defence spokesman said here.
Naik Dipak Kumar Maity (43) who was killed in the attack yesterday, had joined the Army in 1997 and hailed from Midnapur in West Bengal, he said.
He is survived by his wife and a 13-year-old daughter.
The spokesperson said Gunner (operator) Manivannan G, who also died, was only 25 years of age and had donned the uniform in 2013.
Manivannan hailed from Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu and is survived by his parents.
Their mortal remains will be flown for last rites to their native places where they will be laid to rest with full military honours, the spokesman said.
He said in the hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and remains committed to their dignity and well-being.
Two jawans were killed and four others injured when militants attacked the Army convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway yesterday.
