In the morning rush hour today, major traffic snarls were witnessed in south Delhi areas that include Nehru Place, Moolchand and the Ring Road stretch near Hyatt Hotel, said a traffic official.
It was around 10 AM that a long tailback was witnessed at the NH-8 stretch from Gurgaon to Dhaula Kuan.
With time, the jam extended along Ridge Road, creating a chock-a-block situation near central Delhi's Karol Bagh, the official said.
Later in the day, severe congestion was reported on the route from Munirka to Palam, which includes Rao Tula Ram Road, the Jasola - Sarita Vihar stretch, including the area near Apollo Hospital, near Golf Course in New Delhi and Jhandewalan Road.
Other regions which remained clogged throughout the day include Sarai Kale Khan, Kashmere Gate ISBT, Ashram Chowk and Chirag Delhi, the official said.
"Adequate personnel were deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow as and when we received information about severe congestion. In many cases, they were caused by breakdown of buses and other vehicles, which were duly removed from the roads," Special Commisioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said.
Yesterday, bumper-to-bumper traffic was seen in New Delhi region, especially around India Gate C-Hexagon, and South Delhi areas which include Chirag Delhi, Vasant Kunj, Chhatarpur, Greater Kailash and the BRT corridor.
According to official data, as many as 10,021 people were challaned for violating the scheme, which stayed in force from 8 AM to 8 PM on weekdays during the first fortnight of the year.
The government had stipulated Rs 2,000 penalty under relevant sections of Motor Vehicle Act for each violation.
