During the 20-minute meeting, the Chief Minister briefed the Prime Minister on various development initiatives undertaken by the new BJP-led government in Assam.
"I have informed the Prime Minister about the precarious financial condition of Assam and sought the central government's help to salvage the situation," Sonowal told reporters after the meeting.
The Chief Minister said he has also submitted to the Prime Minister a 'white paper' on the financial condition of the state, which is facing a fund crunch.
Earlier, the Chief Minister called on Vice President Hamid Ansari, who is also the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
Sources described the last two meetings as "courtesy call" by the new Chief Minister, who took charge on May 24.

The Chief Minister also asked the Deputy Commissioners to identify the issues and concerns which create law and order situation in the district and submit report to the government projecting the aspirations of specific communities with suggestions for different programmes for fulfilling them.
The DCs were also asked to bring about reform in the Social Welfare department stating that the department has experienced setback in recent times due to mismanagement and lack of motivation of the employees.
He also directed the DCs to conduct motivational workshop with all functionaries of the department to boost up the morale for a reformative change.
