Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced that the state government would go for a CBI probe into the recent happenings along the Assam-Nagaland border in the wake of kidnapping of two youths allegedly by Naga miscreants on June 26.
In a meeting with a joint delegation of seven organisations here tonight, the Chief Minister said the government would hand over the case to the CBI to unravel the truth, a government press release said.
Gogoi said the first priority of the state government was to restore peace in the affected areas and to send back the displaced people to their homes, the release said.
The Chief Minister told the delegation that the probe instituted by the government at the Additional Chief Secretary level and judicial inquiry would also help in finding out the truth behind the incidents, including police excesses, if any.
Gogoi also apprised them about the talks going on at the chief ministerial and official level to contain the situation, it said.
Assuring the delegation that security measures would be in place, including permanent police pickets, in the affected areas to instill confidence among the people living along the inter-state border, the Chief Minister said adequate rehabilitation measures like food and medicine would be provided to the affected people.
