Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi paid a visit to the Umananda Temple, a 17th century Shiva temple, on the Peacock island in the river Brahmaputra after it reopened on Tuesday.
The temple remained closed for the past several days in view of the flood in the state.
The visit was undertaken to ascertain the upkeep of the temple and its vicinity especially in the aftermath of the floods, a Raj Bhaban statement said here.
Mukhi also talked to the temple priests and others to find out whether the floods have caused any damage to the island or the structures leading to the temple.
Accompanied by his wife Prem Mukhi, the governor offered puja at the temple and prayed for the well-being of the people of the state, the statement said.
He directed district Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu to ensure cleanliness in and around the temple and put in place the best possible amenities for the devotees, keeping in mind its tourism potential.
