Assam and Meghalaya will be carrying out joint operations to flush out militant outfits that have set up camps in disputed areas along the border in both the states.
The decision was taken at a meeting of nodal officers of both the states held at Guwahati today, official sources said.
"Both the states, have agreed to go for a joint operations against armed miscreants or militants operating in the disputed areas," an official source told PTI.
During the meeting, both states admitted that criminal activities are on the rise in the disputed areas between Karbi-Anglong, Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi-Kamrup areas, they said.
At the meeting, the Meghalya delegation was led by the Commissioner and Secretary (Home) Jopthiaw Lyngdoh and the Assam team was led by the Commissioner of Border Areas Gyanendra Tiwari.
The Meghalaya team also included the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendent of Police of Ri-Bhoi District, West Khasi Hills District and Jaintia Hills district and Assam had the Deputy Commissioners and SPs of Kamrup - both urban and rural - and from Hamren of Karbi Angling district, informed a source who attended the meeting.
Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Peter J Hanaman said that the meeting is part of the spade work to take the contentious issues to a higher level.
In the meeting the officials agreed to fully ensure that the district administration interacted with each other to maintain the agreement reached by the two states on the disputed areas should be adhered, sources said.
This is to ensure that the developmental programmes carried out by either of the two states should not be disturbed at any cost, they added.
According to sources, the 'status quo' agreement will go a long way in addressing the old age disputes between the two neighbouring states.
