The encounter took place at Seijosa along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border last night.
A group of 12 NDFB(S) insurgents came to Assam side and when the security personnel challenged them, they started firing and the man died in the ensuing shoot-out, Assam Rifles Commanding Officer Col Rohit Pratap Singh Thakur said.
The deceased, Ramesh Pratap Singh, hailed from Uttarakhand.
NDFB(S) insurgents massacred 81 persons in Sonitpur, Chirang and Kokrajhar districts in a series of attacks last month.
