Assam rolls out scheme to promote double cropping

Assam government has launched an ambitious scheme to increase agricultural production by providing facilities and assistance to farmers for double cropping in their lands.
Under the programme 'Momai Tamuli Barbaruah Krishak Bondhu Scheme', facilities and assistance will be provided for double cropping in all the crop areas which have so far been utilised for single cropping only.
Launching the scheme at Timtimia village in Jorhat yesterday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said efforts were initiated through this programme to increase agricultural production of the state.
He further said since 70 per cent people in the state are associated with agriculture, giving much needed emphasis to the sector has been the focus of his government.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated a solar energy regulated first ever irrigation scheme under the 'Momai Tamuli Barbaruah Krishak Bondhu Scheme' at the same village and participated in a community seed sowing programme.
Speaking on the occasion, state Agriculture Minister Rockybul Hussain said the scheme will lead to socio-economic development of the farmers.
In the function, Gogoi handed over power tillers to farmers and financial grants to several self-help groups.
At an another event in Titabor, he distributed cotton thread to 2,000 weavers under Chief Minister's 'Jeevan Jyoti Swaniojan Scheme'.
Organised by Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council, Gogoi also inaugurated a training programme on computer education and skill development.
Later, he inaugurated Thengal Kachari Autonomous Sports Complex at Titabor and kicked off a women football match on the occasion.
