The engineer, Rajnish Pancholia, had demanded Rs 1.60 lakh as bribe from the contractor, Rajesh Gavde, for clearing his Rs 16 lakh payment pending with the Indore Municipal Corporation, Lokayukta Police.
Gavde accepted his demand but at the same time tipped- off the anti-corruption agency which laid a trap and caught Pancholia accepting Rs 20,000 as first instalment of the bribe amount, they said.
A case has been registered against the assistant engineer and further investigation was on.
