The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) today raised hope for 60 candidates selected for the posts of Assistant Professors in different faculties but put a rider that appointments would only be made after the high level committee, headed by dean of Studies verified the qualifications.
The Executive Council of the HPU in a meeting today opened the "sealed" envelops. Interviews for 32 posts of assistant professors were held in 2012 while interviews for 28 posts were held in 2015 but the envelopes could not be opened as selections were challenged in the court.
The shortage of faculty in the University had been a major issue and even the High Court had taken notice of it and asked the varsity to fill the vacancy posts time and again.
The committee would screen the bio-data of selected candidates and ensure that they fulfilled the eligibility conditions as per the revised guidelines of the University Grants commission (UGC) andsubmit the report which would be placed in the next meeting of the executive council slated in first week of August for approval.
The UGC had recently exempted the candidates registered for MPhil/PhD programme before July 11, 2009, from clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the State-Level Eligibility Test (SLET) in order to become eligible for appointment as assistant professors in colleges and universities.
However, this exemption is only valid if the candidate has fulfilled certain conditions including that his/her PhD degree should be awarded in regular mode, the research thesis should have been evaluated by at least two external examiners, the candidate should have appeared for viva-voce and have published at least two papers based on the PhD thesis in research journals.
Lastly, the candidate should also have made at least two presentations at conferences or seminars.
